ROSA PARKS- HISTORY'S DIYer
http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/rosa_parks.htm

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks will always be associated with the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-56 which many regard as the start of a major civil rights offensive in America. Rosa Parks was a seamstress when the boycott began but she was far from ill-educated.
Rosa Parks was born on February 4th 1913. America was effectively a segregated society, whether it was in the South or in the cities of the north and east. Job prospects for African Americans were poor and many could only look forward to the lowest paid jobs – and be thankful that they had a job. Education, if it existed for African Americans, was done within the community, especially in the south, where schools were segregated. Buses and restaurants were also segregated in the South. Whereas segregation in the South was obvious and open, the writer Zora Hurston has pointed out that it also existed in many other parts of America, though more disguised. This was the America in which Rosa Parks grew up.
Her mother was a teacher. She was also a member of the NAACP, as was her step-father. Parks was taught to read and write by her. Her first school only had one teacher in it to teach all the children there, aged between five and their teens. Parks recalled in an interview that there were as many as 60 students at her school - taught by just the one teacher. The law stated that schools could be separate but equal. Rosa Parks had a five month school year – the rest of her time was spent working on farms.
Parks went to an all-black college, the Alabama State College, but could only find work as a seamstress in Montgomery. However, Rosa Parks was involved with the NAACP. She served as a local secretary to it and was later an adviser to the NAACP Youth Council. In 1943, she had experienced discrimination on the buses in the South firsthand. Having paid her fare, she was told to use the back entrance of the bus to get to the ‘black’ seats at the back of the bus. As she walked to this door, the bus drove off leaving her where she was. However, as a member of the NAACP, Parks would have known about the Claudette Colvin story.
On December 1st, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man who was standing as all the ‘white’ seats had been taken. She was arrested and on December 5th, a boycott of the buses started that lasted for 381 days. The boycott only ended when shop keepers in Montgomery urged a settlement as their livelihoods were being ruined as so few African-Americans went into Montgomery to do any shopping. In 1956, the Supreme Court deemed that segregation on buses was unconstitutional. Along with the ‘Brown’ decision of 1954, this legal ruling is seen as being of great significance in civil rights history. Parks was given the title “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement” – though it is a title she is modest about.
“Four decades later I am still uncomfortable with the credit given to me for starting the bus boycott. I would like (people) to know I was not the only person involved. I was just one of many who fought for freedom.”
When asked why she refused to give up her seat when three other African-Americans did, Parks replied:
“Our mistreatment was just not right, and I was tired of it. I kept thinking about my mother and my grandparents, and how strong they were. I knew there was a possibility of being mistreated, but an opportunity was being given to me to do what I had asked of others.”
The success of the boycott and the decision by the Supreme Court did change Montgomery – but it also made Parks enemies. She and her family moved to Detroit to escape racists. In 1987, Rosa Parks, with her husband, established the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute of Self-Development. This organisation provides career training for black youths but it is also involved, via its Pathways to Freedom, with educating youths on civil rights history by visiting the scenes of important civil rights cases.

WORDS TO THE WISE

"LET OTHERS LEAD SMALL LIVES, BUT NOT YOU. LET OTHERS ARGUE OVER SMALL THINGS, BUT NOT YOU. LET OTHERS CRY OVER SMALL HURTS, BUT NOT YOU. LET OTHERS LEAVE THEIR FUTURE IN SOMEONE ELSE'S HANDS, BUT NOT YOU."---------- JIM ROHN

WORDS FROM THE WISE Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.

THROUGHOUT HISTORY, IT HAS BEN THE
INACTION OF THOSE WHO COULD HAVE ACTED; THE INDIFFERENCE OF THOSE WHO SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER; THE SILENCE OF THE VOICE OF JUSTICE WHEN IT MATTERED MOST;  THAT HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR EVIL TO TRIUMPH.-- HAILE SELASSIE 1st.

AN AUTHORITY WITHOUT WISDOM IS LIKE AN AXE WITHOUT AN EDGE

WORDS OF HAILE SELASSIE 1ST

“Education develops the intellect; and the intellect distinguishes man from other creatures. It is education that enables man to harness nature and utilize her resources for the well-being and improvement of his life. The key for the betterment and completeness of modern living is education. But, ' Man cannot live by bread alone '. Man, after all, is also composed of intellect and soul. Therefore, education in general, and higher education in particular, must aim to provide, beyond the physical, food for the intellect and soul. That education which ignores man's intrinsic nature, and neglects his intellect and reasoning power can not be considered true education.”

Wake Up- Its not a Competition

Hi Guys,

A little bonus for the morning medz, something to keep the minds ever flowing. A quote from  Haile Selassie 1st, Kings of Kings. A man that promoted self reliance or in other words DIY (doing it yourself) and DITHO (doing it to help others). Its something for all to learn from no matter your so call religion , whether your a  Rasta , Muslim, Buddha. Check it out vibes it and leave your comment and let us reason.

Peace and Blessed Luv.

HAILE SELASSIE 1ST

“The temple of the most high begins with the body which houses our life, the essence of our existence. Africans are in bondage today because they approach spirituality through religion provided by foreign invaders and conquerors. We must stop confusing religion and spirituality. Religion is a set of rules, regulations and rituals created by humans, which was suppose to help people grow spiritually. Due to human imperfection religion has become corrupt, political, divisive and a tool for power struggle. Spirituality is not theology or ideology. It is simply a way of life, pure and original as was given by the Most High of Creation. Spirituality is a network linking us to the Most High, the universe, and each other…”

IN HONOR- BREAST CANCER

Greetings DIYers your DIY Activist here!!

Today we are going a little bit of our normal routine. As we are know today we are repping pink for breast cancer. And for those who just could stand the pain that comes with it I over stand, and to those who just didn't care to do it , because there is an alternative.(formula) am disappointed in you. And thanks to the  this web site Cancer Research UK for sharing what they have discovered, so here's an article that the posted. http://cancerhelp.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/cancer-questions/how-is-breast-feeding-related-to-breast-cancer

How is breastfeeding related to breast cancer?

Breastfeeding can protect you against developing breast cancer. We don't know exactly how breastfeeding is protective but we know that it definitely is.

A large Cancer Research UK study in 2002 compared breastfeeding history in women who had breast cancer with women who hadn't. It was a very large study, involving the histories of 50,000 women with breast cancer and nearly 100,000 women without.

The longer the women had breastfed during their lifetime, the less likely they were to get breast cancer. According to the researchers, this was a very striking finding. They made sure that the women's age, menopausal status, ethnic origin, number of births and their age at the birth of their first child were all taken into account. Breast feeding still lowered breast cancer risk by 4.3% for every year of feeding. There is also a 7% reduction in risk of breast cancer for each child born.
A 4% lowering of risk doesn't sound much. But, as breast cancer is quite a common disease in developed countries, breastfeeding every child for an extra 6 months would mean about 1,000 fewer cases of breast cancer in Britain each year.

This research is a major step in explaining the difference in breast cancer rates between the Western world and developing countries. In developing countries, women tend to have more children and to feed each of them for much longer. Interestingly, in Japan 90% of women who have children breastfeed. Japan is often talked about in relation to the incidence of breast cancer because, although it is obviously a developed country, breast cancer rates are much lower than they are in Western countries. Usually, people talk about diet as the explanation for this. But it may well be cultural differences in feeding babies that explains it.
These findings are important for helping us to prevent future cases of breast cancer. But the research may also help us in developing treatments. Any new knowledge about how breast cancer is triggered can help scientists to develop treatments to tackle it.

Researchers are now looking into whether breastfeeding can help to protect women who carry one of the breast cancer faulty genes – BRCA1 and BRCA2. One Swedish study, published in 2004, found that breastfeeding may reduce breast cancer risk for BRCA1 carriers who breast feed for more than a year in total. There was no difference for BRCA2 carriers. Since then, other studies have given conflicting results and so it isn't possible to draw definite conclusions about whether breastfeeding can change breast cancer risk in BRCA carriers. Research is continuing to try to find out whether breastfeeding reduces breast cancer risk in women with these gene changes.

Technique: Working with Pleather

Sewing Tips and Techniques

                                                                             Pleather

Hi all
Have you ever looked at a fabric and just fell in love. On your way home to have thoughts of all the projects you can use it for and with a wide grin an open possibilities you eagerly set out on your plans.... Sounds great right but what if you discover that you have never worked in this fabric before? It has happened to me before  an embarrassing amount of times but I always try to use it anyway and end up having to spend a colossal amount of time trying to learn about drapery and thread. So to help alleviate some of this guess work I'm going to try and talk on various fabrics and ways to deal with them.

Today I'm going to try and deal with some of the problems that can arise using pleather.

What is Pleather?
This is a synthetic leather that is made from plastic. Pleather is often used as an inexpensive substitute for leather  and may also be preferred because it is lighter than leather.

Stitching
When stitching on pleather do not use small stitiches. You may run the risk of perforating the pleather and causing it to rip (think..."tear here on the perforated line).

Needle Size
Look for a size 11-16 needle when you want to sew pleather

Thread:
Use a synthetic durable thread like rayon, upholstery weight polyester or nylon.

Sewing Tips:

Also note when working with pleather do not pin. This will cause the pleather to have extra holes that you do not need. Instead use clips. When working with patterns lightly trace them out on the wrong side of the fabric  http://thecrafterscornerbvi.blogspot.com/
